Can anyone give tips on how to get perfect photos at night and in day time reducing noise to minimum?
Secondly are the presets in canon powershot a550 like night scene, landscape, portrait worth using or should i use it in auto mode or may be Manual??

Take the ISO out of the “auto” mode and use the lowest ISO your camera supports. You will have to develop your lowlight shooting skills. Use the viewfinder with the camera held next to your eye and cheek using both hands and the camera movement will be minimized

Absolutely, in good light, select the lowest ISO, probably 100. At night, it’s a different story, with a higher ISO necessary, since you have little light to work with. A program such as Noise Ninja can take much of the “noise” out of your image. The night scene provides two exposures- the first for the foreground using flash (usually people posing against a night scape) and then the shutter stays open to expose the background (city lights or whatever). A tripod or other way to steady the camera using the night mode is essential. You have to understand what each of the modes is doing- in portrait the camera selects a larger aperture to help throw your background out of focus; the landscape mode essentially does just the opposite, selecting a smaller aperture to provide an image with greater depth of field so that pretty much the entire composition is in focus (of course you need good light for the small aperture to yield a proper exposure).

I agree totally with the other answers and wanted to add that there is an excellent program called Noise Ninja that does an awesome job at removing noise and you can usually find free download trial versions by searching google.
