    You have a problem
The 5 volts in the USB port is NOT regulated, nor is it able to monitor the charging rate to the Li-ion battery, its temperature and other important factors when an Li-ion battery is being charged.
Add to that, the battery in your camera is a 3.7v battery. 5v would overheat it, especially with it still in the camera. There is a reason Li-ion batteries are charged outside the camera … to keep it cooler while charging.
Think of the $50 as insurance or penance for allowing your original charger to get stolen. Don’t do that again

Not an answer, but seeking clarification on Answer 1.
While not optimal, does it actually charge from USB? Answer 1 mentions the difference in voltage and cooling, but I bought a camera today and travel for work so I dont want to take an extra charger.
    Thanks
