It’s never a good idea to point a camera in the direction of the Sun. Doing so increases the probability of flaring and the bright backlighting casts dramatic contrast upon the scene and underexposes everything other than the Sun.. It’s sure to give you aweful photos unless you have a specific purpose for the silhouette effect or you know what you’re doing (flash setups, which isn’t possible with the W300 anyway).
Follow-up:
Since the sensor of a point & shoot like the W300 is constantly exposed to light in order to provide a live feed to the LCD, it shouldn’t be pointed at the Sun too long. It should be OK to point your camera at the sun regularly for short durations, but longer durations may cause permanent damage to the sensor.
