Hi, I put in two perfectly charged aa alkaline batteries into my camera, but it just tells me to charge/change the batteries and shuts off. What am I doing wrong?

I’d recommend to use Duracell NiMH rechargeable batteries. Get the new precharged one. It keeps the charge longer. With a pair of NiMH, you can shoot more than 100 shots.

You need rechargeable NiHM batteries. NiMH Battery NB4-200 or compatible to be more specific.
Look in your manual for the specs.
If you use incompatible batteries your camera won’t work (it’ll keep shutting off to prevent damage)

Alkaline batteries? I have seen “rechargeable” alkaline batteries–but usually they are one-time use only.
