I bought a new Canon Powershot A1100 IS today. And after coming home I realized that it makes a “chattering noise” when it is in Auto mode. This happens when it automatically tries to focus. Is this “chattering” noise common??
I haven’t heard it in my other, older camera.

Sounds like the noise of the IS motor working away.
Disable the IS feature and see if the chattering continues.
If it persists despite the IS being switched off go back to the store and ask to see another camera in operation (same make and model obviously) and see if it does the same thing.
Reckon its the IS motor though.
If the lens is trying to focus you should hear a whirring sound not a chatter. The whirring is the sound of the lens motor running the focus ring.
Perhaps you should return it to the store where you bought it and get an exchange.
