Depends mainly on how heavily you’re using the LCD and flash.
Using alkalines and the industry-defined “average” usage averages about 200 shots.
Taking available-light pictures with the LCD turned off and using the viewfinder you can get nearly 1000. (Using the viewfinder instead of composing pictures in the LCD also reduces blurry pictures due to camera shake.)

Hi ‘Gone Fishing’
(I’m assumming.)
You went with the Canon
Try this link: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro…
It’s from the Canon site>Canon 590 IS>Specification…scroll down to ‘Power Supply’. It gives you and idea how long the power will last in camera with AA batteries…comparing ‘alkaline’ and ‘Ni-MH’ (based if LCD screen is used 100% of the time).
I would suggest trying the Energizer Lithium batteries, they are little power houses. They are definitely worth the extra expense. They are the only batteries that I will use. I even use them over the rechargeable ones that are overrated. I am on my second Canon and I love it!!!
