Before taking a picture you have to press menu. Once in there scroll down 3 or 4 spots. You will see style as normal, you move right and it becomes vivid. Keep moving right and the last two choices are black and white and sepia.
Just bought this camera 2 weeks ago and used black and white to take pictures of my nieces on the 4th of July. Came out extra cute. Sorry I don’t know the exact name of the menu item. Still learning the camera and don’t have it at work. I will look when I get home though.
EDIT: It should be like this:
Make sure camera is on and ready to take a picture
Before taking the picture press Menu
Scroll down to the third choice, Color Mode
Scroll right until you get to Sepia or Black and White.

You can only make this adjustment in a couple of modes, it will almost certainly work in P(rogram) and M(anual) modes and maybe a few others, but not all.
Press Menu, Scroll down to Color Mode, and across to B&W.

    page 44 of the manual:http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DSCH10_…
menu > shooting > color mode > (choose normal, vivid, natural, sepia or B & W)
