I read that it has 3x but something else said that it has 12x total zoom! Which is it?

My Powershot SD1000 does 3X optical and 12X with digital on movie mode.
Normally I’d discourage digital zoom because it just degrades image quality and if it really needs to be done can be done on a computer afterward. However, with a movie it’s much harder to crop on a computer so use the digital zoom if you absolutely must. If possible use optical or get closer to your subject, but if using the digital will make the difference between a good movie and a bad movie you should use it.

For the video feature, digital cameras only use the optical zoom capability, in your case 3X. The 12X total zoom and means 3X optical plus 4X digital is for picture taking.

3x is the optical zoom … the rest is digital, cropping the already tiny sensor.
