Hey I want to know much zooming I will get if I buy this tele-converter lens. In canon website it is given that this lens gives 1.5X zoom. So will the total zooming be 12X+1.5X? Is it worth to buy this??

The x in zoom lenses is just the difference from the widest focal length to the most zoomed in focal length. Thus a 50mm-500mm lens is a 10x lens, but so is one that goes from 28mm-280mm. So there are two ways to answer the first part of your question as to the “total zooming”
1) If you left the tele-converter on ALL the time you still have “just” a 12x lens, albeit one that goes from 54mm-648mm instead of 36mm-432mm.
2) If you want to know the total x you can achieve then it’s from a no tele-converter 36mm to a 648mm with tele-converter which is an amazing 18x zoom.
As for “is it worth it”?
Hmmm, it’s really a tough call.
CONS: Adding glass to a lens often lowers its optical resolution, so the final photo may look almost as good on a print if cropped it as opposed to tele-converted zooming in. Also many camera require you to tell the camera (in the menus) that you are using a converter, which adds time to setting up for the shot. Finally, keeping a camera steady at 648mm is no easy task.
PROS: On the other hand you get to see the results of your “crop” in real time on the display (or viewfinder) with the tele-converter on. Auto-Focusing should be a bit more accurate since your subject is bigger. And the resolution (image details) should be better (but only marginally).
MY TAKE: At about $100 it’s a pretty reasonably priced piece of equipment for what it does, but the real question is do you need it? And that is best answered by the question… Have you ever asked yourself, “if only I could zoom in a little bit more I could get this really great shot?”
You’ll get 18X with that tele. If your not satisfied with your current max zoom then it will probably be worth it.
The lens for the Powershot S5 IS is NOT interchangeable in that it does NOT come off the camera body like the lens for an SLR. This “attachment” fits onto the front of your non-removable Powershot S5 IS lens. It does give an additional 1.5x magnification, but you also asked if it is worth it. Everybody will have their opinions — here is mine — NO, it is not worth the price. For the same total cost of your Powershot S5 IS plus the tele-converter, you could have purchased either a Canon G7 with 10 megapixels or the G9 with 12 megapixels. All three cameras have IS technology, and all three have 4x digital zoom. The G5 IS sports a 36mm – 435mm zoom, while the other two have 35mm – 210mm, but the G5 IS is only 8 megapixels, and weighs a full 6 ounces more then the other two cameras. It is NOT about the length of a lens, but it is all about the amount of usable megapixels.
Go for it. It is certainly MUCH better than using digital zoom.
432mm x 1.5 = 648mm Now that is a long lens.
To really upgrade your camera you would have to buy a DSLR and lenses. Have you ever checked out the cost of a 600mm lens for a Nikon or Canon?
