The item is new but the battery life is terrible – only lasts for 30 shots or so. It is a rechargeable battery that came with the camera so I don’t know what is going wrong? The battery is a lithium ion so I don’t why it lasts so little?

Take it back to the store, if it’s only getting 30 shots either something is wrong with the camera or the battery/charger. I have a Canon A710 IS that uses 2 AA rechargeables and I get 350+ shots with no battery management at all.
Battery life degrades over the years, but you say it is new. Turn off the screen on the back of the camera and use the view finder, The screen uses a lot of power.
Like the other guy said you may have a bad battery, but you can always order a replacement one from sony if you visit their wedsite. and if it turns out that the new one has just the same problem then at least you will have two baterys therefore double the life time.
You may have a bad battery from the factory. If not, and the life is really that poor, try turning off the LCD and shoot pictures throught the viewfinder.
try a different brand
make sure it is rechargeable
Good energy management is the key …keep the camera turned off when not in the process of shooting. Don’t be tempted to use the LCD to “show off” your shots … the LCD uses most of the power of digital cameras.
Using your viewfinder will not only reduce energy drain, but will help steady the camera when shooting in low light. Since your view finder is not optical, but electronic, there will be some battery drain when using it … to is is important to shut off the camera between shots if not contiguous
30 shots is ridiculous.
Go back to the dealer and ask for another battery.
You can prolong battery life by:
– using the LCD screen as little as possible
– using flash as little as possible
– setting a high ISO when using flash
Hope this helps.
