Depending on what you want to do there are alot of options. Although Pricey, probably the best camera you could buy is the panasonic LUMIX very adaptable for a manual photography enthusiasts, and has a great autofocus as well as an incredible lens. You might also look at the Canon Rebel-can be a good camera for a beginner depending on the model- that sony you were looking at is “okay” in my opinon seems it more flash than function- as far as slim and stylish goes my perxonal recomendation is the Cannon Powershot- takes GREAT pics for a point and shoot.
I have a Cybershot DSC-P200. It has 7.2 megapixel. Takes wonderful pictures. Easy to work and understand. It is perfect for a first time camara user. Good luck.
