I would recommend Canon SD890 IS.it come with same 10 MP but better zoom 5x and cheaper price.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015DP…
or if you don't mind AA battery Canon Powershot SX110IS is a good choice 9MP with extra z10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EQ4…
and if you don't mind bulky size.Highly recommend Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K 10MP with 18x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom.High quality Leica lens, picture quality are excellent.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CCL…

The SD880 IS should be a very good choice. You won't need to buy an extra battery because it has a very good battery life of up to 310 shots per full charge. Just give the battery a top up charge every night and you should be set for the day.
The only thing that bugs me is that it doesn't have a viewfinder, but if you can live without one, then it will be fine. If you prefer a viewfinder, then look at a different SD model.
You will also need to buy a memory card or two. Each 2GB will allow approx. 440 high quality images (Large/Superfine). Canon now uses a better codec (h.264) for their video compression, which means you get more recording time (24 minutes per 2GB). You will need a fast card. I recommend the very reliable and popular Sandisk Extreme III SD or SDHC (high capacity SD) memory card. Always Format a brand new card (in the camera Menu) before first use and whenever you need to delete all files from it in one go.
These cameras produce excellent quality images when used in the outdoors, but for lower light, indoor use, they (and many other compacts) do struggle to produce low noise images.
good luck...and make sure you attach and always use the wrist strap because these little cameras can get a little slippery at times. It's your insurance against permanent damage if it were to fall from your hands.
