I’m having a problem where I push down on the button and it feels like it’s taking several seconds for the picture to actually take. Is there a setting I can change to reduce or even eliminate the lag? I’ve used other models of Cybershots in the past and I’ve never had as much lag as I’m having now.

About the only way is to prefocus by pressing on the shutter release part-way to lock the focus and exposure. When you’re ready to take the photo, push the release button the rest of the way.
What’s going on is that the camera has to focus and figure out exposure–which can take a second or so if you don’t pre-press the release.
Fresh batteries, big card 1G or 2G depending on what your camea can use, turn off review, don’t use the flash if you don’t have too. Read your manual all the way through. My canon has a continuous shooting mode that comes in handy for baby shots.
There is no such thing as “shutter lag”.
What you are asking the camera to do is focus and take the pic at the same time.
It will focus, and then take the pic.
You need to press the shutter halfway down and get a focus lock, then squeeze it off the rest of the way for the pic.
If you shooting sporting or fast moving events, that is not what these cybershots are made for.
