I’ve got a G9 camera and the battery that came with the camera doesn’t last long – it’s a Li-ion720mAh 7.4v battery. I’ve seen non-genuine Canon batteries for sale online that were purchased originally from China that are Li-ion 1700mAh however not sure if they are OK to use with the G9.
Has anyone purchased something like this and has it been OK? Has anyone had a bad experience with a battery and the G9 camera?

I, myself would be hesitant to buy a non-genuine product (especially one which comes from China), even though a genuine Canon battery is quite pricey. So, I can’t really answer your query regarding a non genuine product.
Anyway, in regards to the battery which came supplied with your camera…
There are a number of things you can do to try to extend the life of the battery. It’s rated at up to 240 shots when fully charged (with the LCD on) and up to 600 shots (with the LCD off).
The LCD screen is probably the biggest user of battery power, so you can obviously turn it off and use the viewfinder to compose your shots instead.
Also, try to limit reviewing your images on the LCD, and turn it off in-between shots.
Limiting the use of the flash and even turning off the continuous focus (which you don’t really need for static subjects) can also help to conserve battery power.
Charging your battery regularly is probably the simplest advice. And you don’t have to wait till it’s fully drained. Just give it a top up charge before you know you are going to use the camera for the day.
    good luck…

I bought a spare li-Ion battery for my Nikon D100 which cost me about £40, but I can still use standard Alkali batteries as a temporary back-up.
I’m inclined to agree with Petra on this issue….you don’t know what these Chinese batteries will do to your camera. Yes, they MAY be ok, but are you willing to risk your warranty against an ‘unknown quantity’?
I also have a little Samsung V700 pocket digital for which I bought a battery made by Hama which seems to be working ok (has done so for the last 2 years)
