I think the 870 is better.
I bought the 850 3 months ago and I’m going to get the 870 ASAP. The side scrolling wheel on the 850 is ackward to turn.
Also, the 850 has a viewfinder and the 870 doesn’t. However, the 870 has a 3″ lcd screen while the 850 only has 2.5″. You don’t need a viewfinder…there kind of obsolete anyways.
The difference in the zoom will not be noticeable at all.
The 870 has a wider angle lens which will allow you to take group photos without being a huge distance away from the people.
The 850 has a little better zoom. So it comes down to wether you’d want a little extra zoom or a wider angle lens…and also the above mentioned comparisons.
Here’s a link to a side by side comparison of the 850 and the 870 from dpreview.

The cameras are identical except for the fact that the SD870 has a bigger screen and a wide-angle lens. I have the SD800, which also has a wide-angle lens and I love it because you get a LOT more in your picture. Both are awesome cameras, but there really isn’t much difference between the two. Some people like having the option to use a viewfinder if there is a glare on the screen when outside in the sun or if the battery is low, however, most people always use the screen to take hte picture anyway. The larger screen will drain the battery faster. Just something to keep in mind. The cameras are the same. It just depends on if you care about the larger screen/want the viewfinder and if you want the wide angle lens. Hope this helps.
both are the same quality
the 870 has the 3 inch screen
