The Canon is a nice camera but I have wanted to try out Nikon’s better stuff for a while now. I don’t want to go full on DSLR so what would be their version of what Canon is selling as the A650?

There really isn’t one that seem to be equivalent to it. Here is a link that show all of Nikon’s camera. Maybe you could try the P90. That one has the same amount of megapixels but has 24x optical zoom(which is nice), which is way more than the Canon. http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/…
