Are you using the flash? If you use the built-in flash without diffusion for portraits on any compact you will blow out the highlights and washout the colors.
If you are not using the flash then it may just be one of those cameras that always give you problems with this issue.
Or, is the image really bright? If so, then you may be overexposing. Without knowing exactly which camera you have I can’t really help you with that.
