i am looking to get a new camera.i like photography and by no mean a professional but i want to be able to take semi-profesianl pictures.i want a camers that is better than a point and shoot but not as complicated as an slr.i was considering the canon powershot s5is or the olympus sp560.i was wondering if anyone had any input on these as to what would be a better one for me?

The Olympus 18 X zoom lens has a wider range.
If you like wide angle photography, the SP560 is the camera, with its 27 mm equivalent wide angle lens vs. the S5IS 36 mm wide angle.
The telephoto position is also remarkable, 486 mm vs 432 mm of the S5IS lens.
But there are other items too …
    * The S5IS’s 2.5″ LCD screen is also capable of being flipped out and rotates around, which allows you to shot from every position. The SP560 has a fixed one.
    * The S5IS has a built in flash and an external flash hot shoe, and accepts Canon’s EOS flash units. This is really important, if the built in flash isn’t power full enough. The SP560 has only a built in flash unit.
There are two 18X zoom lens options: Fujifilm Finepix S8000 fd (27-486 mm equivalent) and Panasonic Lumix FZ18 (28-504 mm equivalent)
If you are looking for a wider range zoom lens, with a great wide angle lens, and very close telephoto images, then the SP560 would be the one, but, in that case, I would look for the Panasonic FZ18, which has a better telephoto lens.

canon powershot s5is, i have one.
i do photography but by no means could i use an slr or am i anywhere near professional. its amazing, so many modes and eveyrthing, and u can do complete manual mode. its a great camera to have before getting an slr. its 8mp which brings out high sharp pics that have really good focus and itsd 12 x optical zoom which is really good, its got the most amazing macro and super macro options. i say go for it, great value for money!
