I would prefer a Nikon because of superior optics .

First you will have to tell us which camera you own now. The Sony uses a proprietary Memory Stick. Nikon and a whole list of others use the SD memory card.
You will have to tell us which models you are interested in buying so we have at least a chance to give you a prudent answer

I recommend Sony Cybershot. Good quality for all kinds of picture shots. Indoor, outdoor, landscape, portraits, day or night shot. All you need to do is get oriented with your cam & manual before you need to use it for a special occasion.
Sony carries good electronic gadgets and based on my best friend’s experiences, it really is good. I personally use a Canon Powershot digital camera, much cheaper than Sony but of great quality too. I use this for everyday picture shots. II have a Nikon Rebel camera but it is quite bulky. I only use it for scenic landscape/nature shots.
